First thing that comes to mind for me are the xenosaga games. I slogged my way through the first one at the behest of an ex because she was interested in the story but didn't actually want to play the damn thing so just watched me do it. Started the second one but I couldn't stand it anymore and left it and soon after her. Those games make Kojima look like a master of brevity.
