I would argue that Gears of War sold more consoles than Halo 3, though many of those purchasers may have been aware that H3 was impending. I would also argue that Lair was the most hyped game for the PS3, but that soon switched to being Killzone 2. To this day, the defining game of the PS3 remains the unreleased FFXIII.
