I love both series and i think they play nothing alike. Ys is more action based and Zelda is more exploration based.

Ys has a fair amount of exploration, and Zelda has a good amount of action. They are pretty similar, some gameplay aspects are different but a lot of theworld design and level design, along with boss and enemy design is similar.

The exploration on zelda involves chatting to characters, mini games in town, lots of puzzles. In Ys, theres nothing of the sort. The exploration there is is just a corridor where you kill more enemies. You kill thousands of enemies on YS. You drill them by the dozens. On zelda you usually never have more than 2 or 3 enemies on screen at once and only on certain areas and dungeons, while on Ys they are everywhere except on the towns.

Sorry, but they feel nothing alike. Ys is mindless action based that can get a bit repetitive, Zelda requires more thinking and is slower paced. If just having a town and an overworld makes them similar games, then what do we need gameplay for? Also, every game has bosses. :P
