Download and upload speed is not a factor. You need usually 10Kb/s in both directions to be just fine. What is going to make a difference is 1) Having a synchronous connection; A connection that can send and receive at the same time (FiOS, most DSL connections ( adsl and cable can only send or receive at the same time) ) and 2) A low latency connection which is pretty much anything except satellite.
If you are looking for something cheap, I would go with a low end DSL connection. If you do not mind price, then FiOS is the way to go.
