Although, I am amazed the Church actually ex-communicated him, in his lifetime. Only took them 350 years to apologize for their treatment of Galileo.

The Westboro Baptists excommunicated him. The Catholic Church has nothing to do with them aside from a mutual belief in the bible and Jesus.

The point of being excommunicated is that it happens in your lifetime, to tell you that the church does not approve of your conduct or beliefs in a really fundamental way, usually related to your spirtuality (so a mass-murderer wouldn't be excommunicated, but a heretic would be).

Phelps then committed some heresy against his own small church, and now i'm curious as to what that was.
