Perhaps an NPD adjustment month. If they mess up in previous months, they post an unusually high or low amount to bring the lifetime numbers in line with reality.

Has that actually happened before?

Yes, and it's typically February when this happens as the holiday period plus the following January are the most prone to error. Xbox One shooting up over 100k units based on nothing is more than just a little bit strange. It's more likely that it sold 200k+ in January and about the same in February, but NPD significantly undertracked in January.

As for a way to find out, March numbers will be telling. If Xbox One can improve over 100k units month on month with no games, then this supposed momentum certainly has to continue with Titanfall which is packed in for free. Additionally, March is a five week month, so 325k is the absolute minimum for Xbox One, if February has not seen NPD adjustments. That number is before assuming a boost from Titanfall, with a boost the Xbox One should be above 400k.

Agreed, Quoted for exposure.
