I agree... and that's why I'm coming round to the Insomniac way of thinking which says don't go middlewear with engines.
The best U3 engine games are those developed by... wait for it... the guys that built the engine.
The best Source engine games are those developed by... wait for it... the guys that built the engine.
And so on and so forth. It just seems to me recently that there's a real trend where games using licenced engines don't look as good as those developed but the engine developer or games (like Uncharted or R&C or Assassin's Creed) that were developed on their own engines (there are some notable exceptions like Bioshock but they seem to be the minority now).
Also, every developer talks about how they wrote their own extension for this or that or added this code and it makes me wonder why licence in the first place if you're going to muck about with an engine you know less about than its own designers and produce inferior results? And look at all the sparks flying about Too Human... not to mention Turok and Blacksite 51 or whatever it was called.
What do others think? Is this becoming a noticable trend?
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
