I think the biggest problem is the frequency of missions. I felt like I was running around town all the time, gathering materials and saving survivors. I would have liked more time to talk with survivors and befriend them, build fortifications, grow crops, etc. I wanted more time to invest in the social simulation and strategy elements.

So fewer missions would be good. Also, more varied missions. I can't tell you how many times one of my survivors was feeling depressed or sad or angry, and I had to talk them down off the ledge.
