I would recommend this website http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/ when you are looking for graphics card especially. It has benchmark tests for many components so you can see which graphics card that performs best for the cheapest amount of cash.
The most difficult part for me is to buy RAM. I never buy the big brands that cost the most, I usually search the internet to see user reviews of different RAM and what they have to say about them. And then I buy the one that performs the best for the best price. The big buck RAM are of course a safe way to go, they will perform good and all, but it's not something you really need if you "buy smart". You can most likely find RAM with equal performance for half the price.
