You are if you want to play games that release 6 years from now. You may not be buying a completely new machine each time, but you still need to invest money every set amount of time if you want to be able to play the latest games, just like you need to buy the new consoles if you want to play games from that generation.

Then you are spending money on newer hardware, only it's a PC instead of a console. Otherwise, it's the same thing.
