NSLU was sold as a standalone because there are less people who by DLC than there are people who buy full games, so if it was seen as a full game, more people would buy it. It's most certainly not because of its "awesomeness".

And extra levels are extra levels. NSLU has a slightly shorter time limit and one new character, which really isn't enough to make it a "completely different gameplay idea".

That Pikmin example is exaclty what every single online FPS does. They give you new multiplayer maps in exchange for money. I don't get how you can cite this as an example of Nintendo doing it better than everyone else.

No that is not the same.

Pikmin3 was wholly new content.

Most DLC out there is a new character in a fighting game or an additional map that is already on the disc, etc. Big differences.

In 1995, yes it was true DLC and wholly new content. The cases where and FPS gives you a new set of maps, is wholly new content. But that is becoming far less of an occurance.

EDIT: Also NSLU is a complete different gameplay mechanic. Luigi's movement and jump is a lot different than Mario's and that creates a far different experience in a platforming game. Plus the limited time makes the difficulty to complete the level higher. They are very much different.
