Wouldn't the money still go to evil 3rd parties if you buy their games on Steam? What rules out consoles as another viable option to play these games?

It may only be very limited 3rd party games that are not on Nintendo consoles and I will always own a PC, so I'm not also putting out money on additional hardware.

You are if you want to play games that release 6 years from now. You may not be buying a completely new machine each time, but you still need to invest money every set amount of time if you want to be able to play the latest games, just like you need to buy the new consoles if you want to play games from that generation.
