I prefer to think of VR gaming as something inside your head. Much like on .hack and Sword art online. You can feel and interact with others and the computer feeds and reads your on your brain activity and stores your choices on the server where its disseminated to the other users.
That would be true virtual reality. This is just a screen in your face that reads your head movements like you say. More realisticly speaking it needs something else like a kinect to read your body movements so it can anywhere near useful. Occulus rift isnt that.
