Ok, yeah you won't need the OC model and honestly you don't have to get that MOBA but the OC version is significantly more expensive than the standard Z87. I was mostly recommending it as I have one in my rig now and its excellent. That being said there are other good alternatives, are there any special things your looking for in yours or just something basic to get you up and playing.

Nothing special beyond the ability to keep pace with most PC games (preferably looking really good at 1080p for at least the first year).

It would be nice, assuming I take well to constructing my own PC, to have some upgrade options over the next few years that allow me to change a component here or there without having to rebuild the whole thing.

Well the good news is keeping a PC upgraded to play games at Max or close to max at 1080p is nothing like how some people make it out. Current games are HEAVILY GPU dependant and you can quite easily get by with a modest CPU still for many years and really a MOBA you won't virtually ever have to upgrade unless something comes out with new features, or you want more ports or something like that.  So really the only thing your looking at upgrading over time is your GPU. Also someitme in the near future i would for sure get up to 16GB of RAM if your going to start out with 8GB. You should be ok with 8 for the time being but in the next few years 16gb will become the standard as games like Watch Dogs already are having a recommended 6GB of RAM.

So back to your MOBA / CPU, as I said for CPU I would go with any quad core Intel, preferrably an i7 but you don't have to get one of those as i3 and i5 are still plenty used. For your MOBA since you don't need anything complicated just make sure its compatable with Intel, I'd go with a Gigabyte or ASUS MOBA personally but you don't have to. The non OC Z87 would be very solid.

Also keep in mind many retailers offer package deals where you get your MOBA and CPU bundled together for a cheaper cost, and they are obviously compatable as they are sold together.
