In the past years after the collapse of the USSR, the religion has gained popularity very fast. According to Wikipedia 41% of the population belonged to the Orthodox Church in 2012, not speaking about the other minor religions in the country (Islam, Buddhism, other Christian religions...). The Orthodox church has very close ties with Kreml and that might also have some effect.

Well, I think hating gay people and religions are not interaction with each other, not everyone who belongs to church hates gays..
