We have wording "Rodina-mat" - which is smth like "Motherland-Mother" (we have a separate word for Motherland - Rodina). So I think 'Mother Russia' arised somewhere in the middle of bad translation.

Oh okay, because I hear it in movies and it sounds cool with the Russian accent.
