I think PS4 and X1 are both too weak to display _high fidelity graphics_ in VR 3D, as rendering resolution is above 1080p and framerate has to be at a _constant_ >60fps, maybe even >80fps for an optimal experience. That's why I think the rumored Sony VR is primarily ment as a higher end Rift competitor and a partnership of MS and Oculus doesn't sound realistic.
They could only achieve enough power to display "AAA" games in VR if they used multiple PS4s /X1s and that would be an extremely niche market imo.
