That's not I read. I read that the game was always a Castlevania, but they purposely only left the sub title so it could be judged without the weight of the Castlevania name getting in the way. Regardless, it doesnt matter though. It is wearing the Castlevania name and the expectations come with that. That applies to every IP. The is kinda the problem with Japan and their handling of their IP's, they think its just and name that they can drop any game. IP names just easy ways to describe the ideas behind that series

That's from Wikipedia.  In an interview iwth the developer, the game was cancelled and they pitched the idea of it being a Castlevania game with the references people made between Gabriel in the video and Simon Belmont in Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest.

It isn't like the developer Mercury Steam hasn't thrown multiple hints our way that they don't want people comparing it to other series and that they want the game taken on its own merits.  Why do you think they label each game in the series as Lords of Shadow?  To pretty much point out that it's not Castlevania.  It's its own contained series with the Castlevania named slapped across it.

Also if you pay attention to the story, the original game, before it was developed as a Castlevania title, the entire story alludes to the ending and possible sequel in the very first chapter.  Gabriel may never have been "Dracula" but he still would have gained the power of the Lords of Shadow.  The Brotherhood of Light sent him knowing that he would be overcome by darkness as it's the only way they could rid the world of Satan.

Just because there's a name on the title, it really doesn't mean thats the game.  Final Fantasy Legend isn't a Final Fantasy game.  Final Fantasy Adventure isn't a Final Fantasy game.  Tales of Destiny 2 in the US isn't Tales of Destiny 2.  There are a lot of companies that label products in a way that they think will sell regardless of the source material.
