Well "sub-cores" is not an official term either I think.   the SPE and PPE have different roles in the OS/hardware environment, like which one boots first and which one is the master/slave.  The PS3 uses the PPE's support for hypervisor/kernel/user protection model.  The kernels in use on SPEs are much simpler as they don't have to run the full real-time OS, they just run tasks.

At the end of the day though the SPEs are just a type of general logic core.  Both the PPE and SPE are 3.2GHz dual-issue RISC cores.

From what I am gathering from doing a little research on google, they are not general logic cores. I never really bothered with any of the specs for last gen systems and you may be correct. But I can't find anything that says they are general logic cores. They also use a specifically developed instruction set.
