I prefer having no stories. Stories end, games do not. You can play chess over and over again (if you can stand the repetitiveness). If I want to experience stories, there's movies, books, other literature, and even audio. When I play a videoGAME I want to PLAY and not control an interactive story that has mostly a scripted outcome anyways.
Videogames with a story but well defined tasks/challenges are ok, though, as long as it's about those elements (gameplay you might say) and not just the story.
