The appeal of superheroes isn't specific to Americans. Greeks, Chinese and Romans (among plenty other cultures) have their mythological characters just the same. And let's not forget the Japanese with their Goku, Natsu, Naruto, etc...
The appeal of superheroes is universal. You're the one isolating yourself. Probably thinking you're cool for it. -__-

You can't compare Greek, Chinese and Roman religion/mythology with comic book characters. Greeks, for instance, invented tragedy, and those always ended in a tragedy for the main character(s). And tragedies heavily drew on mythology(also on history).
The appeal of superheroes in comic books is NOT universal. We're not talking about religion here.
Religion, by definition, needs something higher than human beings. Comic books need no such thing.
