The PS3 was too expensive and lost a tonne of money upfront, the Xbox One - whilst not losing money - is clearly too expensive upfront.

Gamers cannot afford to purchase $600 consoles en masse, and console manufacturers cannot afford to subsidise ~$100-200 worth of per-unit cost.

Hence, instead of costing circa $600-800, the hardware in the two new consoles costs circa $400 (not including Kinect).  It is therefore relatively less impressive for its day.
