The N64 controller was some real alien design at work.

Had 3 prongs but you mostly held the middle one and the right one.  

Was like 3-4 times the water displacement size of the SNES controller. 

Good for FPS like Goldeneye and 3D games like Mario, Zelda and Kart64.

Terrible placement for 2D fighters and 2D platformers so many didn't appear.

Overall good controller but missing the simplicity and universality of the SNES pad.
