Dissidia Duodecim: 98/ 100

Duodecim sold me on Lightning. Before, from XIII, I didn't really like her. Her performance here, though, was leaps and bounds above what I expected.

The Dissidia gameplay was moderately improved by adding assists, as you can use them offensively or to defend your health and bravery, but the real kicker was the story. Dissidia's story was "meh +" but because it was a cheap fanservice game, no one cared.

I was astounded at how well Lightning worked as the party leader in Duodecim, though. Especially when--after the party is unified and going on their mission--they were still willing to show how stress was getting to Lightning, and she almost gets violent with Vaan right before the climax. That's not stuff you see in a typical JRPG. Usually once the party's united it's flowers and blue skies from then on, not death threats right before the climax. Yet it makes perfect sense for the characters and context.

Then the end happens. Apparently a heartbreaking TPK ending after a string of bosses wasn't enough, because the ending also explained Dissidia's cliche "a hero wakes up" beginning. Now you're just showing off.

The only fault was that there wasn't enough party combat to enjoy the round-robin format, and it's clear the UMD was limiting the game.
