I don't think they understand how hard it actually is to create a reboot and so they greatly underestimate the resources and skills needed. Successfully rebooting a franchise requires a team that's talented (obviously), knows the source material and has the guts and finesse to shake up the formula without damaging it.
If the end product requires too much nostalgia to really enjoy you'll turn off new fans but if it's too different the old fans won't buy it. If the result lacks feels outdated and lacks the old magic you'll end up with a major flop.
