I think this deal between Microsoft and EA was made to push the Xbox One 's DRM. EA honestly thought they could single-handedly determine the next console winner and tada! Wait, what do you mean the PS4 is in the lead?! Nooooooo! Our beautiful DRMmachine! We cancelled online passes for this?! Why?!
Too bad the whole DRM thing didn't work out EA.
