But the way the FB people responded is where my concern lies.

 There's no room for checking error or gentle correction. It seems people take things so deeply personally (which isn't inherantly wrong) that they lash out brutally at those who don't know better and resort to personal attacks (which is inherantly wrong IMO), leaving out a lot of people who want to learn but don't want to have to be belittled for not knowing what is and isn't okay...

I don't want to be told to kill myself and to be labeled a vile, insensitive terrible person because I didn't know something wasn't okay at a particular point in time.

I wouldn't mind Facebook. You think all Phillipinos want white people to kill themselves?
