A change of mindset is a powerful thing, maybe the most powerful thing in the world but that is much eaiser said than done. Insurance companies and the strong spirit of neoliberalism in America will prevent this from becoming a reality any time in the near future. You don't need to go far to find fierce opposition to universal healthcare and powerful people who benefit from a lack of UH.
Ah yes the 50s, ok. Well the biggest problem with trying to enforce 50s policies today is in the 50s America was benefitting greatly from the post-war economic boom. Germany and Japan were destoryed, the British, French, Chinese and Soviets were ruined, America was not. America had no competition, combined with large population growth and a massive demand for industral products, shot America to the top. This gold rush has dried up a long time ago, you can't impose policies from then, now, especially considering the state of America's industries. Mega corporations (which were no where near as powerful in the 50s) and their neoliberal allies will continously oppose a sharp increase tax on them citing that it will raise prices, cost American jobs and these policies are anti-American.
Well, this is the way the world has been running for a while. Politicians from the left, right, centre, whereever have made a living off of double standards and contradictory policies. Look at Obama's contradictions from the things he has said to what he does. But I mean it's not his fault entirely. As long as this neoliberalist mindset exists and the culture continues to support it, you can have anyone be the president but you will always get very little done.
