If things were going well, and there's something to salvage, they'll salvage the IP and use whatever they can salvage on a later project. Nintendo has done it tons of times. Kirby Return to Dreamland was going to be for the Gamecube originally, for example. And Super Smash Bros. was going to be a totally different fighting game without Nintendo characters at all, and for the Super Nintendo. Stuff like this happens, but companies don't throw away projects that easily. I've even seen Microsoft say stuff to this effect that they don't just throw stuff away like that. It is really discouraging news though. We won't see this IP for a long time most likely, and it'll undergo substantial changes.
