Because he peaceably ended Apartheid! (along with F.W. De Klerk, who doesn't quite get the recognition). Just like how folks remember Andrew Carnegie for the countless libraries and concert halls, and not for the massacres at the Homestead Strike. I mean, i'm not keen on strike-breaking at all, but the guy deserves credit for what he did later.
