Why would they move to a new, much bigger, studio if they're laying people off?

Because things change.

But they changed pretty quickly if thats the case cause they moved like 2 months ago. Im guessing the move wasnt to expand to beging with and the lay offs were planned already cause otherwise this doesnt make sense at all. Also how many games do they have in development at once ? This is kind of an important information cause otherwise "they canceled a game" can simply mean they scrapped a very minor project they had there them layed-off the team working on it wich was probably very small, if its only 2 or something like that tham its very hughe and they probably layed-off throngs of ppl.

Yes Sony as a company operates everyday. One day things can be OK and the next they find out they need to trim some fat. I don't understand why people don't get this.

Going from Its all so good were gona move to a larger place and hire even more to hell shit hit the fan in 2 months on a period Santa Monica didnt even release any game so you cant say they ahd any kind of financial crisis because theyre big project didnt work is quite extreme. Also there are a bazillion places that are way less sucessfull than Santa Monica to trim fat, this is a very odd move if it was a big lay-off from a core team at the Studio, if it was a small team working on a small game that got layed-off (while it sucks) would make much more sense.
