Here's a bit of nostalgia...

I think it's definitely a good move, the only thing that has surprised me really is that MS didn't reduce the UK launch price before the system released.

Hey, would you look at that!

"Those who bought the Xbox at the higher price have been promised a "thank you package", which will include two free games and an Xbox game controller."

Obviously, the differences between a £100 cut and a £30 cut are pretty damn big, but it shows they are (were) willing to do something for the early adopters.

That "thank you package" was a legal requirement because they reduced the retail earlier than a new product is allowed to be reduced without compensation. Though with the games being £44.99 and the controller being about £30, the compensation was worth more than the reduction so I actually ended up getting an Xbox the week before the price drop kicked in for a the freebies :D

I think the XB1 has just lasted long enough to avoid that requirement. Though I'd have thought a few months free XBL or something would be nice to give existing XB1 owners.

But yeah, they grossly miscalculated with the original Xbox (they did the £ = $ pricing thing so what lauched at £300 in the UK, launched for like £200 in the US 6 months earlier) add in that the PS2 had just had it's price drop to £199 and had the likes of MGS2 and FFX hitting the market and Nintendo's £149 RRP for the GC (which ended up being £129 by the time it came out as they did a pre launch price drop).
