I don't think they are afraid.  It's probably just because MS has the money to pay for good publicity, or more accurately, cover up bad publicity.  It's also probably the reason we've been getting SO many "does 1080p really matter" articles from gaming sites, trying desperately to say the difference doesn't matter.  Even though a difference as little as 20p was worth bringing up last gen, and it definitely matters enough for most people to upgrade their TVs to 1080p ones.  What really ticks me off about E3, though, is that what MS did is 100x worse than what Sony did with its traget renders, yet Xbox fans have adopted the standard Sony Too^TM attitude about it.
