With so many top notch platform games available on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN, it's hard to say that they are....but then games like NSMB, Rayman, and Donkey Kong come along and I can't help but say hell yeah!! Games like Splosion Man, Super Meat Boy, Braid, Fancy Pants, etc. are awesome but they don't have the production value, length, or polish that the retail games mentioned have.
As a guy that grew up on NES in the 80's and saw the genre almost disappear in the 90's, my old heart fills with pride when I see the 2D platformers treated with so much respect these days.
