3DS has a cocktail of console selling games - on their own Pokemon, MH, Mario Kart, NSMB, Dragon Quest would not propel 43m sales and counting, but together their effect is huge, if anything they probably magnify each other's selling capability, as in someone who goes "wow, Pokemon!" would find it far more difficult to pay ~£130 (price of a 2DS and the game) to play just one title, than someone who goes "wow, Pokemon! And it's got Mario/Luigi's Mansion/Monster Hunter/Dragon Quest/Zelda/Kingdom Hearts as well!" because its more coss effective in terms of the gaming it provides

WiiU is a good demonstration - it has good games, but not enough to get people buying it - you need more than one or two big games to make a successful platform
