Just like the PS4 touch pad is fast turning into the giant "Select button", because why support something not everyone has.

Except that the touchpad is nearly identical to PC laptop touchpads, so games can be designed for mouse w/ touchpad as backup on PC,

and directly translate to a PS4 game with every player ensured to have at least a touchpad, with full mouse/keyboard support like PS3.

Merely supporting mouse/keyboard doesn't ensure that all players will have that, thus a backup input method is needed,

with touchpad, it is basically in the same position as PC laptop touchpads, and even if not AS optimal as a mouse,

it's sufficient to allow games to be designed around an imput method where mouse/keyboard takes prime spot.

3rd party multiplat games will not be using this in any meaningfull way, i think it will begin and end with map navigation, even then in AC4 its still better to use analog sticks to navigate the map. ( I hope its because they just did a lazy job of it)

NO ONE is going to make a mouse based game where you use this touch pad instead, it would be awful.

But none of it matters its a bit of fun and most importantly its super cheap for Sony, its not a $100-200 add on thats bloating the price of the console.

You can use the touch pad in Trine 2 playing as the wizard.
The pad is precise enough to use as a pointer, but I would like to see them use relative position with a mouse pointer like a track pad instead of absolute position. At least enable it in the web browser, people have already figured out how to do it on pc. For browsing it would be nice if you could cycle between the air pointer (from text input) and trackpad mode to move the cursor.

I hope Tropico 5 is going to make good use of the touchpad.
