And I can certainly understand the opinion that the Kinect is a peripheral.

I just simply don't agree. I think it devalues what Microsoft is trying to do and furthermore, I appreciate their attempt at doing things a little differently.
I don't mind the xtra $100 because I see the benefits there.
Others don't... no worries either way.

See, now that I understand the "background" that led you to writing this thread (that Polygon article), it all makes much more sense to me now, and I suddenly understand your behaviour.

So apparantly, you read an article that used a somewhat incorrect definition of the word "peripheral", and indeed used the word in a kind of "negative" way that can be understood as devalueing the usefulness etc. of the device.

So my impression (that for some reason you consider the word "peripheral" to have a negative touch, and are thus keen on proving that it's NOT a peripheral) was indeed correct.

But if someone (like me) is not aware of that recent Polygon article context, it can easily lead to confusion, as I just couldn't understand why you are so concerned about the question of Kinect being a "peripheral" or not.
