"The significant point is that Saddam Hussein is no longer in power, despite there being no WMDs."

Take apart my analogy, I dare you.

If the aim of the war was to take down Saddam and not to find the WMDs then that argument would work. The aim of the PS3 is to sell, regardless of 360 shortages or whatever, that's not Sony's business...

OK, the analogy doesn't work because "take down Saddaam" is one time goal, while selling more PS3s than the competition requires a long term strategy and, once achieved, must be actively maintained.

So unless the entire goal of the PS3 was to sell 1000000 units in Europe in less time than the 360, then this is pretty meaningless. At most its one battle in a long campaign. The 360 and Wii can point to victories week after week in the sales charts.

To continue using dictators for inappropriate metaphors, Sony's claim is akin to saying Mussolini kept the trains on time. Maybe its true, but in the big picture it means nothing.
