Nintendo and MS have only themselves to blame.
NIntendo shunned 3rd parties, gave their online platform little attention, didn't prepare for the upcoming HD puberty and still chased the diamond shitting unicorn with casual gamers. We see the result of that now: no multiplats, massive software droughts and attempts of getting casuals failed.
Microsoft: hubris, acting high and mighty, pretty funny considering they never won a gen. They gave little attention to games(they even announced it as a TV/sports/media box). They thought they "outgrew" gaming and wanted to be the media center of the living room, gaming was only part of what the box could do. They anticipated Kinect 2 to be another huge success without realizing it doesnt do that much more than the original, yes it has extra features and more accurate but it is still the same product.
Sony did everything right: by gamers for gamers, they knew very well the early adopters are hardcore fans, but PS4 transcended the gaming medium and became a social phenomenon. It's announcement youtube video had over 30 million views, more than any super bowl commercial. You see actors posting tweets how they sleep with their PS4(Nathan Fillion), porn stars advertising how you can go to their website on PS4 etc. They cant produce enough to keep up with the demand.
