They have a deep hole in their hearts that they have to fill with things. Obsessing about something is one method to establish a personality when you got none of your own.
It's attention whoring on a mental sickness level. They wouldn't obsess about a thing if others could't see their obsession.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
