Sony blew it by allowing other OS's to be installed. Linux is highly customizable if you know what you're doing. I'm sure somewhere right now someone is working on a version of Linux that is no more then a GUI that allows to launch bootleg games via the hard drive.
Since, Sony has a 10 Year plan the developer is probably in no rush to release it either.
By the way the Linux kernel is very small. If you strip out the stuff you don't need it can be small enough to fit on a floppy disk (if they're still around).
