I've heard that the CPU or something inside the Wii U has been designed for backwards compatibility, so removing the option to play Wii games wouldn't make it any cheaper. The architecture is designed for it, and I'm sure it can also play GC games perfectly, like natively, but that would make it more expensive since they would have to include controller inputs on the hardware etc.
