Apple has used that strategy with their iOS to great effectiveness.  Sure, they're not a gaming company, but there are parallels to be drawn.  Nintendo's recent execution of the strategy has been terrible.  They put forward their hardware and expected software to follow, instead of leading with the software.  Software and hardware do belong together BUT software must lead the charge.

Disagree. Apple does the OS, but their sucess is based on an enviroment created to be as friendly as possible to 3rd party app developers. They invented the easier and cheaper way to a dev create and publish its work in a platform. There are no parallels here, they are the exact opposite of Nintendo. They are more like Sony and MS in the way they try to make things easier to their developers.
