When I look back on my gaming life, there are two significant times in history that seemed awe-inspiring and magical. The first was the introduction of the NES, when every game and genre was new, when the underground of Super Mario Bros. seemed creepy and full of mystery. True 2D gaming was fresh and in its infancy and it was amazing to explore it. The second great time of "new" and "awe" was the change to 3D. Even games with crappy (by today's standards) seemed really facsinating because of true 3D immersion. I can remember the exploring Shadows of the Empire or Doom and being amazed. The games that have followed those early pioneers in 2D and 3D gaming have been great, just lacking that big shift.
So I wonder, will we ever experience something like that again? Is there something new to experience? I feel a little sad thinking that we may never again experience that "fresh" game experience that a new way of gaming provided. Motion controls were cool and so was online gaming. Graphical upgrades have also been nice. But not the same as that new way of seeing a new world. What do you think? What could a new innovation be?
