Neither China nor Vietnam are communist (probably neither are Laos and Cuba, but I can't speak from experience). Both countries have, to some degree, a respect for private property. Communism is fundamentally about public (or state) ownership of property... the opposite of private property.
In many regards, China's economy these days is "more capitalistic" than many European countries.
