Nintendo is in a much better position because the suffering they would endure if they decided to create only software and no longer hardware, would be smaller than the suffering Sony would have to go through if they decided to no longer make TVs (among other things that are losing them money).
By the way, Nintendo may stop creating hardware not only because of a failure like the Wii U, but because consoles may become obsolet, I doubt we will ever see a Playstation VI, perhaps a Netflix for videogames that would work on all tvs will come in the next 10 years.
