That is something I have agreed with all along. That kiddie lunch box look didn't go down well with the image of a "hardcore" gamer. Maybe that was their intention, to make it kid like. Hence many were very likely were sold to kids who had no interest in the "adult" third-party games on the console resulting in poor sales. This is of course, conjecture.
Although not related I believe the lack of DVD playback was a big turn off for many. For me, starting university when the xbox, ps2 and GC were at the height of battle that feature was very important. For so many students wanting to double up a DVD player with a console the GC was ignored. At that time Blockbusters were for renting games and DVDs for a good "boys" night in.
Yet like you it was my favourite of the three, simply because my roomate had one, probably the only one campus.
