Eight will enter, but only one will reign supreme.

i think sony/ms/nintendo need to rethink their console business model if they want consoles to survive.

...listing the "cost of games" and "inconvenience" as impediments to console gaming for Console Skeptics...

cost of games is where smartphones are killing dedicated handhelds and it will be where all these other devices hurt consoles.   $60 is just simply a lot of money for a game and even if the competition's games are "worse" it's often times hard to understand that without actually playing the games.  ...but that stick shock of $60 vs. $1 is very very easy to comprehend.

consoles should, imo:

1. Self publishing is a great start but eliminate every roadblock between developement and selling.  Price control is a big one.  Picking your own release date is another.  I'm sure developers have other complaints and those should be taken very, very seriously.
2. reduce the royalty fees so that publishers/developers make more money.
3. with the more money for developers you've incentivized more development on your machine.  the more your machine does the more people will pay for it allowing console makers to keep their hardware prices "high".   basically, give up on the loss/lead strategy and make sure hardware is alway profitable.
4. make more money on subscription services like ps+ and xbl.  i think they could easily raise those prices to ~$80-100 a year especially if the average game price game down ~$10-20 a game.

this will, imo, look a lot more competitve to these new competitors.
