For what exactly? 4.2m is the sales for Dec 28th.... the shipment is obvious over that and the combined shipment is 7.8m.
Unless there is a magical way to ship and sold in the same day... the late December shipment just get sold in early January... if you account Sony is producing ~200k units per week... then the mininum shipped is the sales 4.2m + 0.2m for the last week of December... so minimum 4.4m.
You are making the SOLD vs SHIPPED mistake.
What they sold:

So, the PS4 oustold the Xbox One by about 500 - 600k and Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by about 200k. Got it.

We know PS4 outsold XOne by 1.2m. (4.2 - 3.0 = 1.2)
we don't know by how much ps4 or ps3 outshipped the xbone or x360. We know ps4+ps3 outshipped xbone+x360 by 400k. (7.8 - (3.9+3.5) = 0.4)

according to ethomaz the PS4 shipment in 2013 is at least 4.4 / 4.5 million.
The Xbox One shipped 3.9 million.
that leaves 3.3 / 3.4 million for the PS3, while the Xbox 360 shipped 3.5 million.

0 < ps3 shipment < 3.6m
ps4 shipment + ps3 shipment = 7.8m
This is what we know.
It is highly propable that x360 shipped more than ps3 but that does not mean x360 sold more to consumers since we don't know stock levels at the begining or at the end of the quarter.

It happens. You order based on a forecast, expectation, sometimes they are wrong. It can also be because their stock levels for ps3 were too high and for x360 were too low at the begining of the quarter.
