Yeah...the Gamecube was the console to own...even though you couldn't play any of the biggest blockbusters including GTA, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Soild 2-3, God of War, or Devil May Cry...well you get the idea.
The Gamecube was more like the console to resale after you play the 1 or 2 games that were decent on it which is why it sold like complete shit even when compared to the first gen Xbox.
No way in hell was the PS2 the "Wii of it's gen". Yeah it was weaker, but it came out a year before the other two, and it was powerful enough were it didn't matter much. That seriously sounds like something someone born in the 2000's would say. Completely devoid of logic.
But the answer to your question is by a mile the software. The PS2 had something for everyone unlike the Xbox which was only for pseudo PC gamers and the Cube which was only for kids and hardcore Nintendo fans. That's way it's embraced by so many in the gaming community were as the PS3 was not.
I still can't get over the Gamecube being "the console to own" though. That's just priceless
